לאחר סיום לימודי הנדסת מכונות ועבודה של 3 שנים כמהנדס בתחום, נסע יונתן לפרטוריה בדרום אפריקה ע"מ ללמוד רפואה וטרינרית. את הלימודים סיים ד"ר שני בישראל. לאחר שנת Internship בבית החולים הווטרינרי בבית דגן ושנה נוספת במחלקה לכירורגיה, החל במסלול התמחות של הקולג' האירופאי לכירורגיה. בשנת 2001 סיים את התכנית וב-2003 עבר את בחינות ההסמכה וקיבל תואר מומחה Diplomate, European College Veterinary Surgeons ו- European Veterinary Specialist in small  animal surgery.

בשנת 2017 סיים בהצלה את  ההכשרה ובחינות ההסמכה ב American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation והוכר כ Dipl ACVSMR גם בתחום זה.

את שעות הפנאי, יונתן מנצל לשחייה במים פתוחים וריצה עם כלבו סאני.

Veterinary Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Specialist (Canine) - DVM, MS, DACVSMR, cVMA

אילן הוא בוגר ביה"ס ע"ש קורט מחזור 1999.  לאחר שנת אינטרנשיפ בבי"ח בבית דגן, התגייס לשירות קבע ביחידת עוקץ כווטרינר הראשי ושירת בתפקיד זה במשך 15 שנים, במהלכן הקים את המערך הווטרינרי המבצעי ביחידה ובצה"ל. לאחר סיום שירותו בצבא, עבר לארה"ב שם סיים מסלול של 3 שנים התמחות ברפואת ספורט ושיקום של כלבים בשילוב תואר מאסטר במדעים קליניים, בבית החולים הווטרינרי של Colorado State University. לאחר שעבר בהצלחה את בחינות ההסמכה למומחה של ה ACVSMR, נשאר לעבוד שנה נוספת בבי"ח כחלק מסגל ההוראה האקדמי של המחלקה, ואחראי על ה clinical trials. לאחר מכן עבד מספר שנים במרפאת מומחים כראש המחלקה של רפואת ספורט ושיקום. בשנים האחרונות אילן משמש כיועץ לחברה ביטחונית מקומית בנושא כלבי עבודה ומאמץ גופני בכלבים, ועובד locum בקליניקה במחלקת רפואת ספורט באוניברסיטאות Cornell ו CSU.
